Tesamorelin GHRH analog: a research overview
Tesamorelin is one of the few GHRH analogs with a current FDA approval. Here's a peaceful walk through the trials that got it there.

Published findings
Tesamorelin's research record includes several randomized trials in people living with HIV. In a 26-week study in NEJM (2007), visceral fat decreased 15.2% with tesamorelin and increased 5.0% with placebo; lipids improved and IGF-I rose by 81% [1]. When investigators combined data from two phase 3 trials (The Journal of Clinical Endocrinology & Metabolism, 2010), the drop in visceral fat persisted through week 52, and glucose measures did not shift in a clinically meaningful way [2]. In 2019, a Lancet HIV trial of 61 participants with HIV and non-alcoholic fatty liver disease reported a 37% relative drop in liver fat fraction compared with placebo [3].
Mechanism at a glance
Chemically, tesamorelin belongs to the GHRH-analogue family; its prescribing label describes it as an analog of growth hormone-releasing factor [4]. Its pivotal trial tracked a large climb in IGF-I relative to placebo [1].
Regulatory & WADA notes
Tesamorelin received its first U.S. approval in 2010. Today's labeling (EGRIFTA WR) confines it to a single use, trimming excess abdominal fat in adults with HIV and lipodystrophy, and says plainly that it isn't meant for weight-loss management [4]. This research material is distinct from that approved medicine. Athletes should note that tesamorelin is listed by name in section S2.2.4 of WADA's 2026 List, a class banned at all times [5].
